Experience the incredible island of Sicily through this fantastic seven night journey. Stay in three different accommodations: an olive estate, a lovely bed and breakfast and a four star hotel in Palermo. During this tour you will taste exquisite cuisine, you will meet the wonderful Sicilian people and above all, you will get the authentic taste of this Mediterranean gem.

This enriching culinary journey in Sicily takes you to a fabulous olive estate where you will have a cooking lesson with the owner. While in this area you will visit the biggest archaeological park in Sicily. Then onto some of the best places to visit on the island including Segesta, Erice and the opportunity to see the famous and amazing salt pans. The trip wouldn't be complete without tasting the famous Marsala and Planeta wines.

Next you will stay at a beautifully restored bed and breakfast in a typical village in Sicily. The chef is amazing and he will teach you some wonderful recipes during your hands on cooking class. A visit to the Valley of the Temples will be a highlight, as well as a cooking class with a real Duchess when you transfer to Palermo. In short, your journey will give you the opportunity to taste, smell and see all that is Sicilian.

Day One - Arrival in Palermo

Welcome to Sicily!

Upon your arrival to Palermo airport you will be met and transferred by private car to a wonderful olive estate in the western part of Sicily.

Accommodation in your reserved room at the olive estate. Meet the owner for a guided tour from the oil mill and through the orchard. The former owners were a noble family and were amongst the most powerful figures of the Italian Socio-political panorama from XIIIth to the XIXth century. You will visit the Laboratorio dell’Olio and will taste different vintages of the famous olive oil.

Dinner included and overnight stay.

Breakfast at the farm. Today you will have a cooking class with the owner of the olive estate.

Enjoy your lunch in a wonderful garden. During the afternoon you will visit on your own Selinunte Park, the biggest archeological park in Sicily.

Return and overnight stay. Dinner on your own this evening either at the olive estate or a local trattoria.

Breakfast at the farm. Pick up by your English speaking driver guide and transfer to Marsala to admire the Salt Road and its Salt Pans located on the coastline between the cities of Trapani and Marsala. Locals extract the salt from the seawater following the same procedure used by the ancient Greeks and Phoenicians who once colonized this part of the Sicily. Once extracted from the water and dried, the salt is heaped into mounds and covered in tiles—just like the ones used on our roofs—so the rain won’t melt the salt before it’s packed.

Then visit a winery to taste the famous Marsala Wine. During the afternoon you will visit Erice, a wonderful and mysterious medieval town perched on a hilltop at 2000 feet with sweeping vistas of the western Mediterranean Sea. Walking through the cobblestoned streets you will smell a variety of aromas emanating from the numerous pastry shops for which Erice is famous, and see the Norman Castle and the Duomo. Then you will stop at the world famous Pastry shop by Maria Grammatico (Book: Bitter Almonds, by Mary Simeti) to taste her almond sweets, Genovesi and nougat while toasting with a glass of Marsala wine. Lunch on your own and free time.

Then a visit to Segesta to admire the Greek temple and the theater on your own. As the major Greek city in western Sicily, ancient Segesta was besieged and conquered by Dionysius and Agathocles, and eventually fell to the Romans. Here you willl see this beautiful Doric temple, dating from the fifth century B.C., perched on a hill of wild fennel. Although never completed, it is in an excellent state of preservation, and commands a majestic setting from its position.

Return to the farm and overnight stay. Dinner on your own tonight either at the olive estate of a local trattoria.

In the morning you will visit the famous Planeta winery, one of the most beautiful wineries in all of Sicily located in Sambuca di Sicilia in the Valle del Belice. You will have a wine tasting served with typical products followed by lunch.

Time at leisure to visit Sciacca, the town of Sicilian Pottery.

Arrive at your lovely bed and breakfast where we suggest having dinner. Overnight stay.

Breakfast is followed by a hands on cooking class with a vibrant and talented up and coming chef, the owner of this beautifully renovated bed and breakfast, who has loads of personality. More importantly he is a talented professional serving up creative and incredible dishes. He uses the surrounding local ingredients, fresh and simple, coming up with some divine delicacies. Lunch is included.
During the afternoon leave for Agrigento to visit the beautiful Valley of the Temples, one of the most representative sites of Greek civilization in the Mediterranean area. Your local tour guide will tell you all about the Temple of Hercules, the Temple of Juno, the Temple of Castor and Pollux, the wonderful Temple of Concord and finally the beautiful Garden of Kolymbetra.

Return and overnight stay. Dinner on your own.

Breakfast and check out.

Drive to Vallelunga and arrive at the famous Regaleali Estate. Visit of the winery and wine tasting. You will taste some of Regaleali’s most evocative wines, such as Nero d’Avola, Catarrato, and Inzolia, which will be perfectly paired with the typical Siclian lunch.

Late afternoon arrival in Palermo and accommodation at your beautiful four star hotel. Dinner on your own.

Breakfast in hotel. Afterwards, you will meet the the Duchess of Palma for a fascinating day through Sicilian culture and cuisine. The itinerary begins with a morning visit to the Capo market, the oldest in Palermo, where you will buy fresh seasonal ingredients, chosen amidst the colorful stalls glowing with fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, resounding with the "abbanniate", the sellers’ cries to attract customers. You will see foods you have never seen before! Then a short stroll home to savour the hidden beauty of Palermo, one of the most intriguing and mysterious cities of the Mediterranean. The walk will take you past the Baroque magnificence of the Quattro Canti along via Alloro to the luxuriant exuberance of Piazza Marina garden and the austere majesty of the Norman palazzo Chiaramonte.

Once home, you will enter the spacious kitchen of the palazzo by the sea where the cooking class takes place. After the class you will enjoy your delicious Sicilian fare which will be enjoyed in the magnificent dining room of the palazzo, together with the Duchess.
After lunch, a fascinating tour will take you through the splendor of the exquisite and beautifully restored 18th century palazzo by the sea, the last home of Prince Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, author of the world-famous novel "The Leopard". Your day will conclude with a visit to the luxuriant terrace facing the sea, fragrant with jasmine, wisteria, hibiscus and bougainvillea.

After the tour, you will meet your local guide to visit the most important monuments of Palermo as Quattro Canti (the Four Corners), Palermo’s extravagant Baroque square and the twelfth-century Cathedral of Palermo.

"Dear Jo-Ann - We just had the most amazing week. It was everything we could have hoped for and more. We are already planning a "make your own pasta party" at our house to introduce friends to the very unique flavours we tried and made! Jo-Ann, the others who came through Active Gourmet - Ed, Cathy and Kelly were all very complimentary about the service they had received from you, as were we. I was hugely impressed with your immediate attention to every detail and I will certainly recommend friends to your website if they are considering similar trips to ours." - Joneen and Ray S., Auckland, New Zealand
