Abruzzo, Italy - 6 nights

Southern Italy is one of the most beautiful areas of Italy. During this six night culinary and exploration tour you will get to known this incredible region through its cuisine, its people, its landscapes and its traditions. During the week you will also have the unique opportunity to visit the local trabocchi "fishing houses" located on the Adriatic Sea. You will meet a native fisherman and his family and enjoy a delicious meal with them. Although a mountainious region, you will have the chance to discover the mountains and ocean, returning home with memories that last a lifetime. We offer many similar itineraries in this region with a different theme and different dates throughout the year depending on season. 

 

Learn to make pasta, explore, visit a castle, meet some artisans, taste wines and get to know the flavor of this special place.

 

The area has so much to offer and may not be as well known as other parts of Italy, but you will be amazed at the highlights of this region.

 

 

 

ITINERARY

 

DAY ONE - SUNDAY

 

WELCOME TO ABRUZZO!


Transfers from Rome are included with your tour. You will be picked up at 2:30pm from Rome Fiumicino International Airport and transferred to an ancient Roman town on the Adriatic Coast. On your journey you will witness the beautiful Abruzzo mountains with their incredible landscapes.

 

Your home for the week will be a charming family run hotel located right in the historical downtown. After settling in, you will meet your guide for your stay and go over your Italian culinary escape.

 

Tonight you will enjoy a delicious welcome dinner in a traditional restaurant in the heart of the town.

 

DAY TWO - MONDAY

 

COOKING CLASS WITH A LOCAL WOMAN - PASTA!

 

Enjoy another delicious traditional breakfast - freshly baked bread, whole fruit country-style preserves, cake, pastries, coffee, tea and freshly squeezed juice.

 

We’ll visit Vasto’s colorful market to get seasonal products.

 

Afterwards you will have a cooking class with a local woman who will teach you the secrets of making fresh pasta. She will share some of her recipes for sauces, depending on the season you might have a menu of Bruschette with meat sauce, Pasta alla chitarra with meat sauce and polpette (meatballs), Cavatelli with vegetables and Tarallucci (typical biscuits from Abruzzo). Enjoy your creations for lunch.


This afternoon, you will discover Loggia Amblingh, a promenade overlooking the fascinating crescent-shaped coastline, the old town with its medieval Castle, charming lanes, a tower, the Cathedral and Piazza Rossetti, dedicated to Gabriele Rossetti, a poet from the town and father of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.


Dinner tonight will be in a traditional restaurant in the heart of the village. You will meet a local artisan during the visit.

 

 Tonight you may experience dinner on your own in one of the many restaurants of Vasto. Buon appetito!

 

 

DAY THREE - TUESDAY

 

COOKING CLASS ON AN AUTHENTIC FISHING HOUSE

 

After breakfast we’ll explore the Abruzzo coast line. After a short and easy walk inside Punta Aderci Nature Reserve, one of the 10 most beautiful Italian beaches according to the British daily The Telegraph.

 

Next we’ll visit a trabocco that is constructed mostly from acacia wood and railway iron sleepers

 


Today is a special day and with weather permitting, you will have a unique experience of having a cooking class on an authentic fishing house that is constructed mostly from acacia wood and railway iron sleepers. Your host will show you how to fish from the house sharing with you the history of these incredible fishing homes. 

 

The fisherman's wife will share with you some family recipes using fish right from the Adriatic such as marinated fresh anchovies, mariner’s-style clams, octopus in tomato sauce with polenta, stuffed mussels, fish soup alla vastese and Pizzelle (typical sweets from Abruzzo) with home-made fruit conserve.

 

This afternoon we will visit the enchanting San Giovanni in Venere Abbey that sits on a hill dominating the coastline, surrounded by orange, olive, oak and pine trees.

 

Tonights' dinner will be in a local and traditional restaurant in the heart of the village.

 

 




 

DAY FOUR - WEDNESDAY

 

TIME ON YOUR OWN - RELAX, READ, OR EXPLORE
   

In the morning depending on the tour you select, the following activities can be offered: gelato making class, truffle hunting, olive harvest, grape harvest, olive harvest, walking, salami making - (see selections and dates below under the "Dates" tab)

 

Free afternoon to relax or get moving - whatever your heart desires. Perhaps go to one of the many beaches, do some biking, visit a natural reserve. Dinner at your leisure. 

 

DAY FIVE - THURSDAY

 

ARTISAN AND MEDIEVAL CASTLE VISIT


Enjoy an early hearty breakfast. In the morning, you will visit a farm where the owners will reveal the secrets of sheep and cows farming to you, teaching everyone who would like to participate, how to milk a sheep or cow ready for ricotta cheese. Of course you will taste some of the cheese and then you will learn how to prepare the delicious ricotta cheese in their creamery.


Enjoy a scrumptious traditional lunch which will include the recently made warm ricotta cheese. Delicioso!
 
This afternoon, we will explore Roccascalegna's enchanting Abruzzo’s castle. Tonight you may experience dinner on your own at one of the many restaurants. 

 

DAY SIX - FRIDAY

 

OLIVE OIL AND WINE TASTINGS AND PIZZA COOKING CLASS

 

Following breakfast you will be treated to a visit to an olive grove by a family that has farmed it for 3 generations to produce DOP olive oils. You will see why Homer described olive oil as “liquid gold” and we will finish with an olive oil tasting.
    
Next we are onto an award winning winery that sits between a marine park and the mountains. You will have a wine tasting with pairings with local cheeses and salami and tour of the vineyard and cellars by the owners. 

 

After lunch there will be a cooking class on making homemade pizza that includes the teaching of traditional bruschette and tiramisù! Dinner tonight will be in the home of the house wife where the cooking class takes place and you will feast on your creations.

 

DAY SEVEN - SATURDAY

 

After breakfast departure for Rome Fiumicino airport or your next destination.
