Piedmont, Italy - 5 nights
Available October - Sunday to Friday

Enjoy a six day gourmet wine tour where you will sample Piedmont’s culinary delights: white truffles, mountain cheeses, and, best of all Piedmont’s stunning array of wines, with Barolo and Barbaresco at the top of the list

SAMPLE ITINERARY

DAY ONE

ALBA’S MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL & FOOD FESTIVAL

Today Alba launches the truffle season with a medieval festival. The centerpiece is a donkey race, which dates back to Alba’s defeat by Asti in 1275.

Today the Palio is accompanied by a medieval parade and artisan food fair to spotlight Alba's famed white truffles.

Dinner spotlights the French-influenced cuisine of Piedmont, some of the most elegant in Italy.

DAY TWO

TRUFFLE DOGS

A truffle hunter and his hound will demonstrate how dogs sniff out the precious tubers. Next we delve into wine history at the Castle of Barolo, the birthplace of Barolo wine. In the afternoon, we taste some premium Barolo at two wineries: Massolino in Serralunga and either Elio Grassoor or Fantino Conterno in Monforte. Both townships are known for more structured Barolos, rich with tannins for long aging.

Dinner will feature local fare like agnolotti, veal with delicate tuna sauce (vitello tonnato), and bread sticks – a piemontese invention

DAY THREE

LUNCH AT AN ARTISAN CHEESE FARM

Our first stop is Sandrone, a modernist leader, or the small family-run winery Silvio Grasso. Lunch then takes us to the high hills, or Alte Langhe, where we’ll have a buffet lunch at an artisan cheese farm, feasting on freshly made mountain cheese and salumi. In the afternoon, on our way back to Alba, we'll stop at another top Barolo winery, Da Milano, whose wines have consistently offered exceptional price/value.

There’s free time afterwards to explore the wine shops of Alba, a lovely medieval city.

DAY FOUR

BARBARESCO, QUEEN OF THE LANGHE

Today we focus on the other B’s of Piedmont: Barbaresco and Barbera. We’ll start at the Produttori del Barbaresco or Marchesi di Gresy. Both make benchmark Barberescos and several cru, or single-vineyard Barbareschi.

After lunch, we head to Barbera territory and Braida, the estate of Giacomo Bologna, the man who single-handedly revolutionized Barbera. After hearing Barbara’s Cindarella story, we’ll drive to our second hotel in southeastern Piedmont—the land of Gavi wine. The hotel is on the property of Villa Sparina, a leading producer of Gavi

DAY FIVE

GAVI , PIEDMONT’S WHITE WIINE

This morning, we’ll visit the town of Gavi and visit the 11th C. Fortress of Gavi, which once guarded the salt roads from Genoa to Milan. Then we’ll head to the medieval townhouse of Dolce Vita’s owners for a fun, hands-on cooking lesson. On the menu: bagna cauda (vegetables with a creamy garlic/anchovy dip), risotto al Gavi, and tiramisu. We’ll also raid the cellar for a sampler of Piedmont wines.

Afterwards, we’ll tour Villa Sparina’s estate and 17th C. cellars, followed by a tasting of its award-winning wines. Our farewell dinner is at the hotel’s elegant restaurant.

CLIENT REMARKS

Patricia J., New York City

"I've lived and traveled in a lot of countries, but I honestly can't remember a more beautiful experience - the countryside, the food, the wines, the people. Everything was about as perfect as could be."

Hob B., Seattle, Washington

"We thought ourselves very lucky to be in a group of knowledgeable wine people and benefited at lot from their experience. We loved Tuscany and thought the tour was an excellent introduction to the region."

Kelly D., Chicago, Illinois

"It was a great tour and a terrific way to get a feel of the region."

Sally O., Fairborn, Ohio

"I appreciate all the research that went into finding beautiful walks, great restaurants, and interesting wine tastings and tours. Thanks for a great week."

Nancy D., Portland, Oregon

"I feel like I've become a "mini-expert" on the wines of Piedmont. Instead of being baffled by the variety of Italian wines available, now I can say, here's something from Alba, and this little Dolcetto will go well with my dinner."

Mary B., Atlanta, Georgia

"I really did not know what to expect. I'd never been to Italy, knew very little about Italian wines, and never had been on an organized tour. I kept saying tomorrow just can't top this, and then it did. This truly was an awesome experience."

 CULINARY DELIGHTS OF ANDALUSIA

“This was the experience of a lifetime.  It was more than a culinary excursion, it was an unforgettable life experience from learning new cuisine to finding serenity in olive country.  I was introduced to a wonderful world of Spanish cuisine and the down-to-earth lifestyle that defines Andalusia.  I cannot wait to go back!” - Opal H., Northport, Alabama
